Loughborough Photographer: Christening at St Mary’s church
St Mary’s church is one of the two catholic churches in Loughborough so it’s popular with many people from catholic countries, Spain, Italy, Poland etc. It has masses in Italian and Polish and is very welcoming.
Photographing a christening is really like any other family occasion, focusing on the people, the interactions, reactions, the relationships, capturing people being themselves as well as a few group shots because they don’t happen just naturally. I really like the in-between poses shots, the ones when people aren’t quite ready. I sometimes use black and white for these to highlight the reportage aspect, it makes them timeless too.
Baby Henry James was so well behaved, despite the service being longer than planned as they were other families there too. He didn’t cry when blessed with the water and even wanted to play with the water. So basically, he had a good time.
And so did I: I was invited to eat with the family afterwards, my job has many perks! I could then carry on taking candids of people who had not see each other in a long time and were happy catching up whereas others had never met and were delighted to get to know the other family.
