Birth Photographer at Nottingham City Hospital
Just as I was texting Danielle that my bags were ready and the stand by photographer up to date, I go a text saying: guess what, my waters broke. We were 2 weeks before the due date. I hardly slept that night as I kept checking my phone and Danielle and Georges got up at 1am as the contractions became stronger. By the morning I was itching to go and I got to hospital by 9:30. Unfortunately Danilee was only 3 cm and if the contractions were steady , the labour took ages. It’s really hard seeing someone suffer and Dad suffered from powerlessness, even though he was very supportive. I felt powerless too in between taking photos. I fed her chocolate, gave her massages and tried to help as much as possible. it still took another 21 hours and nothing can prepare you for what labour is. Also each one is different. There were risks of hemorrhaging and a C section was a real option. We had our fingers crossed. Thankfully the birth went well, even though it’s not as you’d describe it when you’re in the middle of it.
I love how supportive Dad was, he cried a few times when his wife was so much in pain. It’s really beautiful to see how close they are. It’s a day to never forget! Baby was born quietly and was really relaxed on mum, dad and grandma. Normally only two birth partners are allowed but mum arrived in the night and nobody said anything. In the three hours I stayed after the birth, I saw baby change, look more alert, focus his gaze on dad, find mum’s breast and suckle as he already knew how to. Actually, the midwife had showed us on the ECG that he was sucking his thumb in the womb and indeed he was born finding his fingers well.
Mum and baby are well and I can’t wait to see them again.
